christchurch to lake tekapo

Living in Malaysia, where the lakes are usually darker green in color, I never understood as a kid why do we have to color lakes in blue.

That is until I saw Lake Tekapo myself. The blue hue of the lake looks so glorious under the brilliant bright sun. To be honest, saying that the scenic view has rendered me speechless is actually an understatement. I was blown away.

After being there myself, I can finally understand why Lake Tekapo is always at the top of list of travelers visiting South Island of New Zealand.

In this post, I will be sharing the key stops in between the inland scenic route of Christchurch to Lake Tekapo as well as bits of tips and tricks when visiting Lake Tekapo.

Christchurch to Lake Tekapo: Route Overview

The drive from Christchurch to Lake Tekapo takes just over three hours to complete without any stops, spanning 228 kilometers (142 miles).

Though you can complete the drive without stops, you may want to take a break in some of the quaint towns along the route.

Geraldine, located roughly halfway, is an excellent spot to refuel, use the restroom, and grab a bite to eat.

The route from Christchurch to Lake Tekapo is quite simple; similar to many regions in New Zealand, there aren’t too many roads or towns, making it difficult to go wrong!

Driving as the best option

Driving would be the best option to take the trip from Christchurch to Lake Tekapo. This way you can be flexible with your plans, taking any stops in between the journey whenever you want.

Private tour

Additionally, if you don’t have any vehicle and only have one day to spare, consider taking private tour from Christchurch.

This private day tour combines a day trip to Tekapo and Mount Cook from Christchurch, this way even if you have limited time in Christchurch, you can still visit Lake Tekapo and Mount Cook altogether in one day.

Public transport

Another option is to take the Intercity bus from Christchurch to Tekapo with few stops in between.

The journey takes around 4 hours to complete and the fare starts from 63 NZD up to 225 NZD one way.

If this option is the one that works best for your itinerary, then I would suggest you to stay overnight in Tekapo before heading back to Christchurch to avoid spending 8 hours on road for the return journey.

Best stops along the way

Rakaia Gorge

The Rakaia Gorge Lookout is a scenic observation point located in New Zealand’s Canterbury area, providing a phenomenal scenery over Mt Hutt and the beautiful turquoise water of the Rakaia River.

The lookout can be reached after around 30 minutes of walk each way. The path can become muddy when it rains, so it’s advisable to wear sturdy walking shoes with a good grip.

Geraldine

Next stop is Geraldine. The highlight of this town would be visiting Barker’s Store, a family owned store and eatery.

They sell a wide range of quality syrups, jams, spreads and condiments. You also have the option to stop here for breakfast and lunch.

Fairlie

Known as the ‘Gateway to the Mackenzie Country’, Fairlie is a small town located 30 minutes from Lake Tekapo.

If you didn’t make a stop in Geraldine, then head to Fairlie Bakehouse, famous for their big selection of small pies, perfect for a quick stop for lunch.

Highlights of Lake Tekapo

You know you have arrived when you see the striking blue glacial lake with the glorious background view of Mount Cook.

So where to park your car near Lake Tekapo? Upon crossing the bridge, there will be a petrol gas station on your left, make a right turn into the parking lot. Parking is free of charge.

There are also few picnic tables and benches provided around the parking lot.  Andddd hold your breath — for you are finally here to experience one of the most spectacular views in your life 🙂 Did I say that enough?

Lake Tekapo gets its vivid, opaque bluish-green color from fine rock-flour, created by glaciers, which is dispersed in the water.

From the parking lot, you can see the renowned Church of the Good Shepherd from afar with the stunning view of Lake Tekapo behind. Cross the bridge to get to the other side.

We arrived in the afternoon and we took few quick photos as the place was swarmed with tourists. So I personally recommend you to visit very early in the morning or in the evening when it is a bit quieter.

Then take your time to walk around the lake, soaking in the impressive view in front of you.

Lupins, the vibrant purple, pink, blue, and yellow flowers bloom from the middle of November until the beginning of January.

The lupins field can be found slightly further behind the church. Unfortunately, when we were in Tekapo, it was during the end of February thus spotting them was most unlikely.

I was a bit disappointed to be honest, but it’s ok, I’ll save it for next trip 🙂

To avoid the crowd, we drove and parked next to the Four Square Tekapo to find our picnic spot. There are also free toilets and a playground nearby.

We didn’t secure any of these picnic benches, so we decided to walk down the pathway towards the lakefront to find a secluded spot.

We soaked in the view—clear blue water sparkling under the sun and trees swaying gently in the summer breeze. We ate and listened to the soft sounds of the water and birds in the distance. It was simple and peaceful.

PHOTO

If you fancy the view from top, drive up to the Mt John Observatory View Point and enjoy the magnificent panoramic views of Lake Tekapo and Mount Cook mountain range.

Take note that you will have to pay around 8 NZD for the access per car. There is also a lovely cafeteria where you can enjoy a nice hot coffee with a slice of cake. The price is a bit high though, your choice 🙂
